Storyboard a video project

Are videos useful in the classroom?

It's been a while without updating you... How are you doing? I hope everyone is fine 😊. Today's post is about using videos in our classes. As you may know, the Flipped classroom is an active methodology which, as its name indicates, changes the traditional approach - "what is done at school done at home, homework done at home completed in class".
Furthermore, before arriving at class, students watch the theoretical part of the lesson via multiple equipment such as online videos, presentations, learning management systems and take notes, prepare questions about the parts that they do not understand.
Thus, creating proper videos is essential to foster Flipped Classroom in a proper way. There exist multiple platforms to share videos. However, all of you are thinking of the very most common one...

YouTube videos

Nowadays, YouTube has become the most popular video platform all around the world. This is because is very powerful branding - a video is a great tool to convey your brand messages. Furthermore, a huge budget is not required. Besides, you can watch videos on your phone, and they are highly optimized for this device. Hence, this platform has been chosen to upload an educational video.

Flipping a science class

By brainstorming several topics regarding the 21st century, our group decided to talk about Fridays For Future. It is s a global climate strike movement that was originated by Greta Thunberg. The global climate is a worldwide issue and learners should be aware of its consequences.
As a consequence, we decided to create a YouTube video that makes students reflect on this issue by giving a discussion.

Sketching the video

Since we are sure about the platform we are using and the video we are making, it is time to plan! Thus, a known resource for this blog is being used... Can you imagine which tool I am talking about?
Nice try! As you may know, I am obsessed with Canva - as a teacher, it is my main resource. As a consequence, by navigating several templates, I found an amazing template regarding storyboard planning.

This storyboard is aimed to get the general picture of what our video consists of. Canva was used because the whole team is able to work online in the same document at the same time. Consequently, we have designed a document that includes a timeline of this project and the specific storyboard.

What does this storyboard consist of?

As you can observe on pages 4-6, the storyboard has 9 clips. In every clip, the description of the scene, the summary of the dialogue, audio and effects are detailed. However, it does not mean that several features cannot be modified - this is the first outline to design our video.
Our video consists of a Youtuber who hosts a discussion regarding Fridays for Future. Its channel is named Web Surfers and we created its logo. There are two guests in that debate - one is against this movement (Nuria) and the other one represents FFF in Spain (Marta). Additionally, a Chinese expert gives her point of view as well (Aurora). Besides the discussion, at the end of the video, we ask our audience different questions to foster Flipped Classroom effectively, so the video has a purpose itself and is more interactive.

A storyboard... What for?

This storyboard is aimed to concrete what our video is going to be about. However, there are more goals than that.
  • To plan a proper structure of the video, so the recording time is dismissed.
  • To foster teamwork among the members of the group, since it implies collaboration from the very begging.
  • To engage the whole team in a creative process in which the video can be improved.
  • To analyse the video from an objective perspective so the whole process can be enriched.
In addition, I would like to share with you the specific script that we have been writing in order to record the video with reality. 👇 In light of the above, the future purpose is to record that video in a class with a projector (to project the logo and so on). Furthermore, the second clip will be filmed at home, so we can spend more time editing. I can't wait to watch the results!

Please, any comment is very welcomed in the comment section. In addition, you can read more posts on my blog or check my Twitter account to be updated. Take care!

Furthermore, you can already check out the results, give us a big thumb up for this video
